When the Challenger Shuttle tragedy occurred in 1986, the mission of NASA and the Morton-Thiokol engineering team was to determine the exact cause of the booster failure, then re-design that system as required so that it would never happen again. They spent months recovering and examining the rocket components and testing the materials under all conditions. They constructed mock-ups and used wind tunnel testing. Finally the results of this exhaustive research were proved conclusively. Parts were re-designed and tested, new pre-launch inspection procedures were written and the Space Program resumed knowing that the failure that caused this tragedy would never again occur.
